The street college prep academy
at the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club
The Street College Prep Academy is our community-centered, program of attraction that students can encounter in their neighborhoods, schools, community centers, local parks, and other safe spaces, like the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club, from childhood through their young adulthood.
The Street College Prep Academy currently offers the following curriculum for various programs:
01. Ggm on-track racing:
The Ghetto Genius Motorsports program involves teaching the basics of RC Cars and racing to expose young people to various STEM / STEAM career skills, as well as soft skills like sportsmanship, community-building, and task management.
02. Music Training & Technology:
This course focuses on the fundamentals and knowledge and is where every DJ begins. Students are taught technique, history, beat-matching, as well as blending. The course provides each student with the tools and confidence they need to begin their journey to becoming a professional.
03. Street Musicology: 101
This program includes two tracks to attract students with varying interests.
The first track, Music Technology, focuses on the technical aspects of Hip Hop, including engineering and production. This program is less about the creative process and more about the technology and skills involved in music production. Using various hardware and software, we teach students how to produce music and troubleshoot production equipment. The program is designed with clear progress markers such as student software and hardware usage demonstrations, making it easy to gauge student development.
The second track, Music Industry Entrepreneurship, focuses on the art and skills of music engineers and an introduction to establishing a music business. The curriculum teaches students the history of the modern music industry, music production software and hardware, producing and managing musical performances, and an introduction to establishing a music business. This is an excellent vocational skill set that can easily fund their way through college and allow more time for school work and less time on the job than the typical high school and college-level jobs.
04. Street College Engineering: 101
This program has two tracks. The first utilizes prefabricated STEM Kits that expose students to varying engineering topics and allow students to experience quick success in putting together projects that would otherwise seem out of reach to them. This activity increases students’ confidence in their technical abilities and begins the process of introducing students to their inner genius.
The second track is the Ghetto Genius Motorsports Program: This program included our vibrant Eat, Build, & Race Series Volumes I- IV, beginner-level RC car vehicles and progressing to more advanced RC vehicles over time. Students learn the gears and mechanics behind their RC builds, customize, engineer, and eventually race their creations. The ultimate goal is to build and race new official Ghetto Genius Motorsports Go-Carts. This hands-on program fosters teamwork, problem-solving, and technical skills. Student progress is demonstrated through their car builds as well as their racing involvement.
05. Street College Media: 101
This is a relaunch of our previous collaboration with WILL-TV/Illinois Public Media. Media Mechanics & Production will focus on producing various forms of content, including radio shows, podcasts, TV/Online programs, and documentaries.
This program provides students with practical skills in media production, storytelling, and content creation, while also giving them a platform to express their ideas and creativity. Student progress is demonstrated through their writing and media project completion.
