senior instructor
Job Summary
The Senior Instructor is responsible for developing and administering curriculum that meets the program objectives. Additionally, the Sr. Instructor works directly with participants from the age of 11-21 on applied learning projects exposing them to the fields of Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEAM). This role is crucial in providing hands-on experiences and fostering interest in engineering, computer science, and technology. The STEM Specialist will also be responsible for conducting pre- and post-skill assessments to measure student progress. This position requires a minimum of 6 years experience with youth programming as a participant and/or instructor and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience.
Responsibilities and Duties
Curriculum Development
Develop engaging and interactive STEAM curriculum that aligns with the organization's mission and goals.
Design and implement applied learning projects that expose students to concepts in art, science, and design thinking.
Incorporate innovative teaching methods, technology, and real-world applications into the curriculum.
Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in STEAM fields to continuously enhance the curriculum.
Instruction and Facilitation
Teach STEAM classes and workshops to students aged 10 through 24, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
Facilitate hands-on activities and experiments that promote creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Provide guidance and support to students in understanding and applying STEAM concepts.
Adapt instructional strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
Skill Assessment
Conduct pre- and post-skill assessments to measure student learning and progress.
Analyze assessment data to identify areas of improvement and adjust teaching strategies accordingly.
Provide feedback and recommendations to students and program staff based on assessment results.
Collaborate with the Program Director to track and report student outcomes and program effectiveness.
Collaboration and Engagement
Collaborate with other program staff to integrate STEAM activities into various program components.
Engage with community partners, schools, and industry professionals to enhance program offerings and provide real-world connections for students.
Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on STEAM education practices and trends.
Actively contribute to program meetings and discussions to ensure program alignment and effectiveness.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Art, Science, Engineering, Education or equivalent experience.
Proven experience in developing and delivering STEAM curriculum and hands-on activities.
Strong knowledge of art, science, and design thinking concepts.
Familiarity with instructional strategies and best practices in STEAM education.
Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively engage and instruct students.
Ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Experience working with youth and understanding of their needs and challenges is desirable.
Culturally informed and committed to providing services toward equity and racial justice.
Demonstrates their ability to provide service to persons with special needs, diverse identities, those who have Limited English Proficiency (LEP), persons who are hard of hearing or deaf, and persons with low literacy.
Working Conditions
This position primarily involves working with youth in a number of different programming sites or after-school program settings. Sr. Instructors are required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate program needs.
